Safe Dog Days of Summer

If you’re like us, summer is one of your favourite seasons – especially since we get to enjoy the warm weather with our furry companions. Whether it’s a trip to the beach, a hike on a local trail, or a just a stroll through the dog park, summer is the perfect season for us, and our dogs, to enjoy the great outdoors.

However, it’s important for dog owners to be aware of the potential hazards that come with the summer season, including heat stroke, dehydration, and more. Down below, we’ll be discussing some essential summer safety tips every dog owner should know to keep their pups happy and healthy all summer long.

Hydration is Key

One of the most important things you can do for your dog during the summer is to make sure they stay hydrated. Dogs can quickly become dehydrated in the hot summer months, especially if they are spending a lot of time outdoors. Make sure your dog always has access to clean, fresh water and carry a water bottle with you when you go on walks or hikes. If you’re heading to the beach or lake, bring along a portable water dish so they can drink whenever they need to.

Watch Their Energy

Dogs love to play and run around, but it’s important to avoid overexertion during the summer months especially. Dogs can easily overheat and suffer from heat stroke if they are running around too much in the hot sun. Be sure to take frequent breaks and find some shade for your dog to rest in. If you’re planning on going for a long walk or hike, try to do it early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cooler outside.

Be Mindful of Bugs and Other Animals

Ticks, fleas and bees should always be top of mind when exploring the great outdoors with your dog. Be sure to stay clear of these areas – tall grass in forests and near beaches are some well-known tick hot spots. Bee stings can be painful for pups, especially since they often happen inside their mouths! If your dog does get stung by a bee, don’t panic. Carefully remove the stinger, and apply a cold compress (a water soaked cloth can work while you’re away from home).

It’s also important to keep your distance from wild animals. They’re wild, unpredictable, and can be aggressive – and potentially carry diseases.

Be Safe Around Water!

Swimming is fun – and some breeds absolutely love it! However, like people, dogs need supervision when in the water. Aside from dog parent, you’ll need to be on lifeguard duty too. Keep an eye on them while they’re swimming for any signs of exhaustion. Make sure they’re comfortable with the water, and that there aren’t any species that could be aggressive and predatory towards them. Doggy life vests are easily accessible and always a great investment, especially if you’re going out on the boat!
